reliably informed that a single Red Arrow will be performing a highaltitude ny-by at this years9 Kingsnympton Revel as a tribute to Dad9s many
years of service.
First and foremost, however, Dad was put on this Earth to entertain.
Growing up, it was perfectly normal for Joe and I to see him on stage on
an almost weekly basis, variously dressed as a court jester, Tommy Cooper
(replete with his trademark Fez), or resplendent in the red tailcoat of a
toast master. Dad was never more at home of more alive than when
presented with a microphone and an audience.
In fact, before he went into teaching Dad seriously considered a career in
both auctioneering and television comedy, and was at one stage offered a
much sort-after job as a warm-up artist for ITV. Ultimately however, with his
orst child on the way and with the prospect of moving to London looming,
Dad chose to decline the offer, putting family before himself& a fact that
he allowed me to forget for anything up to a fortnight at a time for the next
46 years.
Also, at this stage, I9d like to pause and spare a thought for my mother
who had to put up with being asked
