me. Devon County Council has launched a new seven-week pothole
repair pilot which began this summer. The idea is simple but effective:
when inspectors visit a reported pothole, they now log all other defects
within 500 metres or up to the nearest junction. This allows repair teams
to ox multiple potholes in one visit, rather than coming back again and
again for single defects. This is the sort of common-sense approach that
residents espoused to me repeatedly during the election campaign
earlier this year. Early signs are positive, and I would welcome feedback
from Kings Nympton residents about whether you notice an improvement
on the roads you use most.
Another big issue is Local Government Reorganisation. The government is
pressing councils to consider structural reform. Our position has not
changed: we remain resistant because it offers little but disruption for
Devon. However, the onancial assessments have shown that the original
idea of two smaller unitary councils is not viable. The preferred model
