Recent Parish Council meetings have seen the issue of sewage
disposal brought to the fore, with members of the community
attending in unprecedented numbers to express their
concerns. These were also sent to the District Council Planners
in the form of a petition relating to an application for four
houses at Skibbows. Ian Blewitt has volunteered to lead a
campaign to address the issue, and is looking for your input.
The original petition that was signed by so many parishioners reads: "We,
the undersigned, publicly register our opposition, for the reasons indicated,
to the approval of the planning application Ref 80344.........."
Many of the signatories give the reason for signing as "sewage and access"
which represents a broad summation of the concerns expressed by many. It
seems to me that we need to be more specific as far as sewage
related issues that affect the village because if we take too broad a stance,
South West Water will just fend off our concerns without properly
addressing them. As briefed to the PC it seems to me that our village
community has two major concerns - they are inextricably linked and are
set out below:
One. That the current sewerage/drainage system and infrastructure that
serves the village is damaged or in a state of poor repair and unable to
cope with current usage demands. Resulting in bad smells, spillages and
requirement to seal manholes. This situation is particularly obvious to
residents in times of low rainfall and high temperatures and is directly
impacting on the quality of life for many villagers and may impact on house
resale values or in some way on businesses and livelihoods
Two. There are concerns over whether or not the current sewage works that
serve the occupants of the village has the capacity to meet demand in line
with licenced permitting regulations. There are reports of spillages and
leaks . Concerns exist as to whether or not the current sewerage treatment
plants has the capacity to deal with current demand and an increased
demand that will result from future housing developments in the village.
As the nominated PC lead I need to know whether or not those who signed
the original petition agree with this position and are happy to lend their
support to it and/or could provide me with hard evidence to support this
view. I am happy to be contacted by email or phone .
