own expense. Those unwilling to undergo it, he offered quarantine in his
own farm houses.
The handwritten correspondence has been transcribed and is available to
read at the exhibition. Our very own John Ayre and Roland Sanders also
read the letters by respectively Buller and Southcomb, bringing to life the
colourful and impassioned exchange that took place. The recordings are
being shown on one of the TVs in the gallery.
So successful was the whole programme that he donated the three pieces of
silverware to the church4the collection is also on display, having been taken
out of secure storage for the exhibition.
The exhibition also includes insights into many aspects of life in the village
over the past 100 years and more4much of it recalled in video archives by
people who grew up here in the 40s and 50s.
The installation runs until the 3rd May at the Museum of Barnstaple and
North Devon4Monday to Saturday 10 - 4. Entry free.
