First and foremost this month we have to say a huge `thank
you and farewell9 to our indefatigable County Councillor
Paul Henderson, who is standing down in the May elections
as the representative for Chulmleigh and Landkey. Despite
representing a far nung ward, Paul has always pushed hard
for Kings Nympton and has worked wonders in steering
funding for various projects, not least road repairs, to the
parish. He has also been patient in explaining the workings
of the county council to us, and feeding back to them if we
have found them wanting. In a month9s time we will have a new councillor,
but we will miss his contribution to our meetings.
Elsewhere we have been surveying the ground outside the Parish Hall to
see where we can site our new nagpole without going through a water or
electricity main! We are hoping it will be in place for the nag raising
ceremony to celebrate VE Day on 8th May. The pole has been partly
funded by a grant obtained by our District Councillor Sue Whitehead. And
talking of grants, the Parish Council will be funding several aspects of the
VE Day celebrations.
Further aoeld, our campaign to get all trains to stop at Kings Nympton
station on request has brought us a seat at the table when policy is being
shaped. The four Parish Councils involved in the campaign have been
asked to join the North Devon Railway Development Alliance, which is
making a business case for line upgrades which would include more
passing places and twice hourly services. This, we are told, would allow for
at least one stop an hour in each direction. It won't happen soon, but it
won't happen at all without local pressure, and the NDRDA has the
support of MPs at both ends of the line, big employers, and most of the
councils served.
On Thursday May 15th it will be the Annual Parish Council Meeting, and all
residents of the parish are invited to attend to raise any issues, ideas or
concerns they may have. Please do come along at 7.15pm if you have
anything you would like to discuss with the parish council. It is also the
time of year when the parish council discuss applications for funding from
local organisations and groups. If your group has not received a grant
application form and would like to apply then please do contact the parish
clerk (knparishclerk@gmail.com) or ask any member of the parish council
(see website or noticeboard in the Square outside the pub for details) and
they will arrange a form to be sent to you. Please return all application forms
by May 1st.
