2025 01 Spring with bleed - Flipbook - Page 3
As we go to print, Spring has truly sprung. Glorious weather to offset the
global mayhem. With the Christmas edition carrying just festive
messages, there is always some catching up to do in Spring, but plenty to
look forward to as well, with new oxtures on the calendar, such as the Car
Show, old favourites like the Easter Trail, and returning events like VE
Day, which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary. I was about to notify
the school of our plans when I realised that as a ten year old I was closer
to the end of the First World War than today9s ten year olds are to the
Second4by nearly forty years! How will they think of the Second World
War4an event almost unimaginably long ago. Perhaps they might like to
imagine themselves as ten year olds growing up here in the 1940s, with
the anxiety about fathers oghting on the continent, or further aoeld, as
many did. Or the fear (or maybe thrill) of German bombers shedding
loads and crashing as close as Beara Cross. There are still people in the
village who remember events like this, and hopefully will share them on
VE Day.
