VE Day
There is a great history of
celebrating VE Day in
Kingsnympton4starting with the
original, on 8th May 1945.The
picture alongside shows a marquee
pitched in the Square, no doubt
crammed with goodies, while the
villagers offer prayers outside.
Move forward 50 years and the village is
gathered again, this time in the open air
for festivities which included an amazing
pageant on a trailer, starring Roland
Sanders as Brittania. The cake was cut
that year by his father Jack, who had
served in
submarines
during the war, and Heidi Jarrett9s father Gerhard
Theuring, who had fought opposite him in Uboats before becoming a prisoner of war, and
eventually settling in Kings Nympton.
So with grand traditions to uphold, what plans are
afoot for this year9s 80th anniversary celebrations.
Full programme
opposite, but the big highlight promises
to be the village production of the
`Don't Tell Him, Pike9 episode from
Dad9s Army. Rehearsals have been
going on behind closed doors since
Christmas, and early signs are that it will
be a memorable performance!
